Biographical info for
ROGER BURNS
of Washington, DC

I have served as a government economist and also as a community leader in the city where I live (Washington, DC). I am now mostly known for managing Internet information resources about chronic fatigue syndrome / myalgic encephalomyelitis, and for publishing the CFS-NEWS Newsletter about that illness. Virtually all of my professional activities have involved writing in some form or other.

I was born in New York City in 1951 and was raised in Long Island, New York. I have lived in Memphis, Tennessee, St. Louis, Missouri, the San Francisco Bay area, and I have spent most of my adult life in Washington, DC.

  • 1973-4: Tax examiner, U.S. Dept. of Treasury, Internal Revenue Service

  • 1975-80: Earned a B.A. in Economics, State University of New York at Stony Brook

  • 1980-82: Earned a M.A. in Economics, State University of New York at Stony Brook

  • 1983-94: Economist, , U.S. Dept. of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics

As an undergraduate I was originally a history major, and I also undertook substantial studies in mathematics, political science, computer science and biology. In the end I eventually earned undergrad and graduate degrees in economics.

  • 1987-93: Elected to four terms as an Advisory Neighborhood Comissioner in the District of Columbia city government, representing the Cleveland Park neighborhood

My involvement in neighborhood affairs has been particularly rewarding, especially my launching of the Save Our Supermarket campaign in 1987. Our neighborhood Safeway grocery store had announced plans to close its doors. This would leave many elderly citizens in the lurch, as there was no other food store within easy walking distance. The Save Our Supermarket campaign was able to delay Safeway's departure long enough to find a replacement food store.

I founded the CFS-NEWS Newsletter and the CFS-L Internet discussion group in 1992, both focusing on the illness that has been named "chronic fatigue syndrome".
