I was born in New York City in 1951 and was raised in Long Island,
New York. I have lived in Memphis, Tennessee, St. Louis, Missouri,
the San Francisco Bay area, and I have spent most of my adult life
in Washington, DC.
As an undergraduate I was originally a history major, and I also undertook
substantial studies in mathematics, political science, computer science
and biology. In the end I eventually earned undergrad and graduate
degrees in economics.

My involvement in neighborhood affairs has been particularly rewarding,
especially my launching of the Save Our Supermarket campaign in 1987.
Our neighborhood Safeway grocery store had announced plans to close its
doors. This would leave many elderly citizens in the lurch, as there was
no other food store within easy walking distance. The Save Our Supermarket
campaign was able to delay Safeway's departure long enough to find a
replacement food store.

in 1992, both focusing on the illness that has been named "chronic fatigue
